If you follow my Instagram, you will know by now that I have a fairly sweet tooth. So much so that I basically make it my mission to track down the best sweet snacks my city has to offer. And, since moving to Cardiff, I have been very committed to this mission. I have tried cakes and pastries and donuts from shops and cafes and bakeries across the city (I know, it is a thankless job but someone has got to do it) and have come across some really great places that make amazing stuff. So, I thought it was only fair that I share this intel with you so you too know where in Cardiff you can secure the best snacks.
Friends In KneadMoy Road, Cardiff CF24 4TD Friends In Knead is a blink and you’ll miss it bakery behind Albany Road that is well worth the few minutes it may take hunting it down the first time you visit. It has an industrialism meets traditional vibe with trays of baked goods and breads on metal shelves but don’t let that put you off. You can get 4 bakes for £10 and they usually have a wide range of (delicious) options including very generously sized cinnamon buns, homemade donuts in a range of flavours (from traditional like jam to more unusual combos like grapefruit), and savoury bakes like focaccia. They also have a fridge which is home to some interesting deli bits and refreshing and unusual drinks. Although their stocks varies and fully depends on when you visit (try to go earlier in the day to get dibs on the best of the bakes), I would fully recommend trying to get your hands on some of their donuts. I had the grapefruit one which had a really zingy, fresh filling within a nice fluffy donut. The focaccias are also really lush and quite big – perfect to have with lunch. Personally, I want to revisit and try the traditional jam donut and one of their cinnamon buns.Deliver DoughCorner Coffee, 13 High St, Cardiff CF10 1AXThe donuts from Deliver Dough were actually one of the things that I was most excited to try when I moved back to Cardiff. I had seen them on instagram and was desperate to get my hands on one. Deliver Dough sell their donuts at Corner Coffee in the city centre or online via Deliveroo. Instore they are sold individually whereas online they come in boxes of four. They regularly change up their flavours but you can guarantee they will always be colourful or glittery or both with a range of toppings – I have tried everything from their honeycomb topped one to an Oreo topped one. They are quite big donuts – but they still never manage to last long in my house. Be sure to check out their insta to see what flavours they have on when you are going to pop in and don’t go too late else you might just find that they’ve all been snapped up (*sobs through a flashback*).
Wild Thing36-38 Cathays Terrace, Cardiff CF24 4HXWild Thing is a place that I love introducing people to. They are a plant-based, ‘pay what you can’ community cafe in Cathays and not only do they have great values, the cakes are delicious from there too. The baked goods they have on offer changes daily but I can guarantee there will be something there that you will love.Personally, I’m not vegan but I like to incorporate as much planted based goodness into my diet as possible and, honestly, you wouldn’t be able to guess that these cakes are vegan. When I visited with the kids, we got some lemon buns that were iced in different colours and topped with edible flowers. The buns were huge and had a really nice zing to them – the flavours weren’t dull at all like some iced buns can be. I also ordered a lavender steamed milk made with oat milk from there and that was incredible. So good in fact that I tried to recreate it at home (spoiler, it wasn’t as good and I definitely burnt milk on to the stove). Once again, check out their insta to see what they have in stock that day or just show up and be surprised! I have seen them do everything from earl grey and lemon cake to chocolate brownies and so much more. They use a lot of different flavours in their bakes too like nuts and floral flavours which I absolutely adore. So, if you are looking for a vegan treat that certainly isn’t plain and boring, head to Wild Thing.Brød126 Wyndham Cres, Pontcanna, Cardiff CF11 9EGAKA The Danish Bakery, Brød is a bakery situated in Pontcanna that sell a range of (delicious) Danish bakes – some of which are vegan. They are mainly known for their range of traditional pastries – mainly their cinnamon swirl that is one of the best that I have tried. They also sell other more unusual bakes like the ‘grandad’s beard’ which is a cake topped with meringue to remember a silver grey beard!When I visited Brød recently, I opted for the vegan apple and cinnamon pastry and it was so lush!Fabulous Welshcakes44, Castle Arcade, Cardiff CF10 1BWWhat is a trip to Wales without trying a good old welshcake? Fabulous Welshcakes is situated opposite the castle in the city centre – and I think they also have premises in Cardiff Bay – and they sell an assortment of freshly made welshcakes for just 50p each. Their flavours vary daily but you can always find the traditional raisin welshcake there but they also experiment with different flavours like chocolate orange and coconut and so much more! The welshcakes themselves are usually sold warm and are fairly small but for 50p, you can easily get an assortment of flavours – although I can’t guarantee they will last long!
Blossom Cafe11 Wellfield Rd, Cardiff CF24 3NZBlossom Cafe is somewhere that I have only recently visited – you can find my full review here – but was so impressed by. Not only are the interiors in their stunning and oh so instaworthy, they do really delicious bakes. They sell a range of cakes as well a variety of Turkish bakes such as simit which is what I bought when I visited – it was like a large bagel that is used to dip into things or eaten with a side like a fresh tomato salad. Blossom Cafe is great for if you are looking for a super pretty spot to take friends and get some gorgeous snaps but also if you would like to try some Turkish delicacies or just things that lean on more Turkish flavours. Blossom Cafe really does bring style and substance.Where is your favourite place to eat in Cardiff?
